No bridge. No road in.
You take a boat, and the island comes to you slowly — coastline first, then the cliffs, then the wall of jungle that goes all the way to the water’s edge.
The Island That Doesn’t Connect
Iriomote Island is the second largest island in Okinawa, and almost none of it is paved.
There are no bridges to the mainland. No airport. No train. If you want to get there, you take a ferry from Ishigaki — and that’s the only way.
What you get in return is an island that hasn’t been simplified for visitors. Dense jungle, mangrove rivers, waterfalls that most people never find. About 90% of Iriomote is national park.
What the Approach Looks Like
Most travel content shows you what an island looks like once you’re on it.
This is what it looks like from the outside — from the boat, on the way in. The coastline as a wall. The trees going up steep and unbroken. The color of the water changing as you get closer.
There’s something specific about seeing a place for the first time from the sea. You’re not in it yet. You’re watching it arrive.
Getting There
The main access is via high-speed ferry from Ishigaki Port. Two ports on Iriomote: Uehara in the north and Ohara in the south. Which one you use depends on where you’re going on the island.
The crossing takes between 35 and 50 minutes depending on the route.
